Inside Washington (a subscription-only news service) reported on May 6 that the Environmental Protection Agency has withdrawn a pro-smart-growth study that received lots of press in February. The study, titled "Characteristics and Performance of Regional Transportation Systems," claimed to show that new roads would not reduce congestion.

However, complaints from the Federal Highway Administration about "fallacious research" and "felony-level flaws" has led the EPA to take the report off of its web site for revisions. So far, this has not been reported in any mainstream news outlet. Anyone interested in more information should contact me at rot@ti.org.

PORTLAND — Critics of Portland-style planning arrived from around the world during the weekend to discuss their concerns about investing in light rail, emphasizing more closely packed housing and restricting uses of farms and environmentally sensitive properties.

The Preserving the American Dream conference wrapped up Sunday, sending about 75 participants back to their hometowns to fight the philosophy known as “smart growth.”
