Humor: My Life Above Pottery Barn
While the story above is from SFGATE.COM (the San Francisco Chronicle) and is intended to be humorous, there's a proposal here on the other side of the country in Montgomery County, Maryland to do just this, and potentially on a large scale. Read this (Adobe Acrobat .pdf, 110 KB) for more.
Not sure that I'd want to live on top of a Pottery Barn (or any other retail establishment, for that matter).

Comments:
I've been to Santana Row, and it really is not a lot different from Morford's description. But how does he think people should live? He hates the suburbs, he hates gated communities, he hates cities.
Perhaps the only "genuine" neighborhood for him is a "streetcar suburb" -- a neighborhood of single-family homes built 70 to 100 years ago so every house has morphed into something different from its original appearance. That's fine, but there are not enough streetcar suburbs to go around.
So Morford can make fun of New Urban communities like he makes fun of suburbs. And if he were alive 80 years ago he probably would have made fun of streetcar suburbs. However, for the people living in these neighborhoods, including Santana Row, they are probably very enjoyable.
