No, this is not a joke

Light rail for Missoula area up for discussion in June

MISSOULA The possibility of a light rail system for the Missoula area will be discussed in the city this June, by a rail specialist from California.

Comments:
Funny. They run small electric rail systems in areas of Switzerland with less than 20,000 persons in service area, and get pretty good ridership. Perhaps they're ahead of their time.

And oh, yeah. The population of the entire Missoula County and Ravalli County area is pushing 150,000, which is much larger than the service area of most of the 70+ Swiss "light railways" which mainly operate in lightly populated rural areas.

Also take a look at the information in this.

anonymous makes a few good points. I live in Missoula and light rail would be very well received here. I think people see Montana as a rural area, and while that's true for most of the state, Missoulaand the 93 corridor is extremely congested. Our traffic jams easily rival cities 10 times the size of Missoula. Add to this is the fact that western Montana is growing exponentially, so things will only continue to get worse. If they built it, I'd ride it.
