Traffic calming plague spreads across the land
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, traffic calming was invented in the Netherlands in the 1960s. Today this blatantly anti-auto program is being applied all over the United States.
"Tinicum Township in Bucks County also recently converted a paved road to gravel," says this article. "That's traffic calming." That's something we can do without.
Traffic calmers say they are trying to make streets for people, not cars. But every single car you see on the road has a person in it who is going somewhere important to them. That is more than can be said for many transit vehicles.

I like traffic calming and I'm glad to see more of it being adopted in cities and small towns across the nation. The safty of those walking is far more important than whether the motorist gets to his/her distination on time.
As traffic congestion gets worse and motor car usage expands, we are seeing more agressive driving than ever before. Motorist look for ways to save time by cutting through side streets at high speed endangering the lives of those living in the community while destroying the quality of life. As a result, speed bumps are being placed in the hopes of keeping the cars within 25 mph in city limits. It's about time.

I think some kinds of traffic calming can serve a purpose. On a residential street they can keep speeds down and discourage drivers from cutting through neighborhoods.
However, in order for traffic calming to be effective drivers must have an alternative to driving quickly on residential streets. There must be sufficient capacity on arterials and freeways to meet the travel demand. Applying calming on routes where people have no choice but to travel quickly if they wish to reach their destination in a reasonable amout of time will not work. It is a futile attempt to "wish away" travel demand.

Agreed. But only if there are are funds to build such an infrastructure.

Disagree.
Small towns should NOT be subjected to those who want to speed and give up their traffic calming safty devices because there are no alternatives. These alternatives cost tens of millions in new construction and those living in peaceful communities should not be forced to pay the price in lives because the state does not have the necessary funds.
