Housing prices increase $2,000 a day

Thomas Sowell reports that housing prices in San Mateo County (between San Francisco and San Jose) have been increasing by $2,000 a day. This is because there is very little building going on there because most of the county is off-limits to building. These bans on building are known by the more politically appealing name of "open space" laws. What has happened essentially is that those already inside the castle have pulled up the drawbridge, so that outsiders can't get in.

There's lot of building going on in cities across the nation because abondoned slums are now being redeveloped into mixed use communities with rail and transit systems. The burbs are a different story because they are rapidly becomming as large as cities themselves with all the traffic, crime and polution. As a result, many small cities in the burbs are fighting against further developement because of all the traffic these additional homes will bring.

Agreed. Furthermore, the draw bridge is NOT coming back down so we better begin building hi-rise condos and apartments or we'll become another San Francisico where the average home costs 500K! Smarth Growth, mixed use communities, rail and public transit systems are the way of the future.
