First Accident on South Jersey Light Rail
A train hit a car and injured two occupants on the Trenton-to-Camden light-rail line, which opened last March. This is the first accident on this line, which some predicted would be the worst-performing light-rail line in the nation.
According to Tollroads News, New Jersey Transit claims the line is a success because it carries as many riders as were projected shortly before it opened. Of course, that projection was reduced by half from the projection made just a year before. Tollroads News estimates that the cost per rider -- not the cost per new rider but the cost of every rider -- is $77. What a great success!

According to the Asbury Park Press, the motorist involved in the accident was racing agasint the train. He totally ignored the warning lights/red lights including the lightrail horn, crossing the train track at the exact moment and nearly killed himself in the process.
As for being the worst performing light rail, this is totally wrong. The train runs every 15 minutes during rush hour each morning. The train runs packed every day as I've ridden the lightrail during the weekends and have spoken with those who use the system during the weekdays.
The projections may be off but this is will change in several years. Thanks to the RiverLine, significant development in Camden and along the rail line has spurred new resturants and luxury condos. In fact, property along the RiverLine is being purchased by private developers at this very moment who are intending to develope commercial business along the route! Real estate property values along the route are increasing and with the new developments in Camden, I expect this lightrail to meet expectations.
