Light-Rail is a Slow Expensive Loser
Light-Rail is a Slow Expensive Loser The CEO of Cypress Semiconductor writes an excellent opinion article
Comments:
>>>>>>The need for Silicon Valley to adopt market-based alternatives -- like innovative express bus schemes or opening the carpool lanes to motorists on a toll basis -- grows more urgent each day. Studies and experiments in large cities show that some of these alternatives offer more throughput at a fraction of the cost and commuting time of the shiny, expensive, empty trains favored by City Hall.<<<<<<
Do you want to know why these innovative express bus schemes do not work? They don't work because the same anti-light rail advocates are also against Rapid-Bus transit because it takes away a car lane or two. The anti-rail advocates do not want to see their tax dollars being spent on new buses or any new form of pubic transportation. Having cities impose bus lane only is far more difficult (if not impossible) than the writer can imagine and studies have demonstrated that very few of these Rapid Bus systems are successful. Furthermore, the anti-rail mob have dismanteled many bus only lanes making Rapit Bus transport a failure.
Do you want to know why we don't have more toll lanes? The same anti-rail crowd is also against tolls and want the freeways to remain free. As a result, you'll never get any efficiecy because the motorist does not want to pay for the privilege of driving. Once a road is errected without a toll, it's almost impossible to request the motorist to pay later as they will vote with their dollar.
Do you want to know why car pool lanes do not work? The motorist does not like this system and prefers to drive by himself. If car pooling was such a great idea, it would have been successful and traffic would be non-existant. The reason they don't work is because people don't use them.
