Critics debate viability of ‘smart growth’ plans
Portland’s example faces criticism during a weekend conference.

PORTLAND — Critics of Portland-style planning arrived from around the world during the weekend to discuss their concerns about investing in light rail, emphasizing more closely packed housing and restricting uses of farms and environmentally sensitive properties.
The Preserving the American Dream conference wrapped up Sunday, sending about 75 participants back to their hometowns to fight the philosophy known as “smart growth.”
